English meals delivered in the West Village
When I first moved to nyc two years ago, I stayed in the West Village for a few weeks. I remember being able to get really great shepard's pie and other British delights delivered. Well, I'm now living just a bit north from where that was and I want my shepards pie!
I can't find this place anymore. I have no idea what its name was and I'm not seeing it in any directories. Any ideas? |

I don't think I've tried that one. That will give me something to do when I get home. Maybe I'll even have shepard's pie for dinner!

Hahahaha. Reading reviews on English resturants could be a hobbie in itself. Some on the reviews just killed me. I like that you can buy "Deep Fried Mars Bars" from 'A Salt & Battery'. The funny thing is that it is really is a deep fried Mars bar. hehe, I have to try it. Even if it sucks, it is sure to be worth it for the humor of it all. Here is the one I'm going to try this week when I get a chance. Anyone want to come along?
--------------------------------------- A Salt & Battery Irish/English Seafood Price Range: Inexpensive to Moderate The folks from Tea & Sympathy have expanded their British empire with a fish-and-chips shop that literally reeks of authenticity. Aside from the main attraction, properly wrapped in British newspaper, there are mushy peas, pickled onions, Heinz baked beans, and the improbably edible deep-fried Mars Bars. Between orders, a relentlessly cheery staff spouts cockney slang. Recommended Dishes: Cod with chips ($11.36), mushy peas ($2.50), pickled onions ($.75), Heinz baked beans ($3), deep-fried Mars bar ($2.25) |

YUMMY! A friend of mine once made fried Mars for me. They may stop your heart from beating for a moment, but incredibly good.
On a related note, there is this food stand in Pittsburgh that makes deep fried Oreos. Basically they dip an Oreo cookie in batter and deep fry it. They are so good. The batter is really crispy and the Oreo cookie gets kinda soft and chewy. |

Give Up & go to the vendor at 60 Hudson
If you live in NY you have to eat there. Best vendor in the city, bar none.

A Salt & Battery
I finally got around to grabbing fish and chips at 'A Salt & Battery' located on 112 Greenwich Ave between 12th and 13th Streets in the West Village. Though, not what I was really looking for, it was a nice experience. The thick British accent on the pretty counter girl just about stopped my heart from beating. The prices were fair for Manhattan food. I ended up ordering a cod with chips (British style freedom fries), a side of home made mushy peas (that is actually what they are called), and a ginger beer. Although there was catsup available, I was very happy to see both malt vinegar and H.P. sauce at hand. The cod and chips came wrapped in authentic English newsprint. My copy was part of the 29June2003 Observer sports section. Thankfully, I didn't find any newspaper ink my chips due to the wax paper inner wrapping. I refrained from ordering a fried Mars bar today, but I'm sure I will be back eventually. One benefit is that it is only three blocks from my flat and they also deliver. All in all, I’d give it two fish heads up.

tea & sympathy
The British style restaurant that I so fondly remember as part of my experiences after first arriving in Manhattan seems to own A Salt & Battery. The tea & sympathy english restaurant and shop has the best shepherd's pie I've had in New York. I was going to grab something from them today, but they were packed and had a queue out the door full of New Yorkers with sticky toffee pudding on their minds. I'll try it again later this week and write a full review then.
